Megan Byard-Karaba
College Access Specialist, (MAISD)
Since 2012 Mrs. Byard-Karaba has coordinated the efforts of a local college access
network providing local districts, students and their families with the tools, knowledge,
information and resources needed to create a college and career ready culture. As a
part of that mission, Mrs. Byard-Karaba works to oversee and implement the MAISD's
place-based scholarship program titled the Muskegon Area Promise. The Promise
scholarship is operated and managed as a designated statewide Promise Zone in
partnership with two local colleges; Muskegon Community College and Baker College of
Muskegon. The MAISD, with support from our CTC training center staff, college access
network initiatives, and active Promise Zone Authority (PZA); is working to create a
menu of resources for all districts centered on High Quality Instruction that includes
career education and career development grades K-12. Mrs. Byard-Karaba, has been a
professional and resident within Muskegon County for the past 27 years. In the years
leading up to her current role she held positions in various educational careers such as
middle school teaching, adult and alternative education coordination and supervision of
instructional services for community education. In 2016 she earned recognition as one
the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce's Agent of Change. Mrs. Byard-
Karaba obtained her bachelor’s degree in education from Western Michigan University
and her master’s degree in education from Grand Valley State University.
